HISTORY
JEWEL
of burgundian architecture
Château Corton Caroline, located in the rue d’Aloxe Corton, was built at the end of the 19th century on the site of an old 18th century château, at the foot of Cortonhill, on cellars dating from the 15th century.
A listed historical monument, Château Corton Caroline is the most photographed monument in Burgundy after the Hospices de Beaune.
Burgundy’s wine-growing history is engraved in its stones… Château Corton Caroline, emblematic of Burgundy’s vineyards, has kept a watchful eye on the Corton hillside for many centuries. A land in which the exceptional rubs shoulders with the wonderful. Its magnificent glazed tiles in the colours of the Côte d’Or shape the winegrowing landscape with finesse and elegance.
VINES HAVE BEEN
grown here for centuries
History tells us that in the 8th century the Emperor Charlemagne owned a vineyard of about 3.5 hectares on the present-day Corton-Charlemagne estate, behind the château.
Legend has it that the Carolingian emperor planted the vineyard with Chardonnay so as not to stain his beard. Corton wine, an incredible vintage which has delighted the greatest courts of Europe over the centuries, was also a favourite with Voltaire, who remained faithful to it throughout his life.
