Auxey-Duresses Premier Cru 'Le Val'
The commune of Auxey-Duresses with its hamlets of Petit-Auxey and Melin, is undoubtedly, in Burgundy, one of the sanctuaries of the Celtic and Gallo-Roman vine. The name of the village, attested to in 696 in the Cartulary of the Church of Saint-Symphorien in Autun, is said to mean “the land of stony hillsides” in Gallic. The name ‘Le Val’ meaning “valley, hollow, dale, sinking” refers to this narrow valley which, from the Côte de Beaune, slopes down into the Hautes Côtes.

Tasting notes: Beautiful deep garnet colour. Superb complex and refined nose. The woodiness is perfectly integrated with the notes of red and stone fruits (cherry, plum, raspberry). The palate is fleshy, intense and balanced. The finesse of the tannins gives it a very delicate and charming character.
Ageing potential: 5 to 15 years
Serving temperature: 16 to 18°C

Tasting notes: When young, the colour is purplish and very deep. The mouth is beautiful and silky. It is a fleshy wine with a very present fruitiness. It also offers a beautiful elegance thanks to the hint of minerality on the finish. All this gives it a good balance.
Ageing potential: 5 to 15 years
Serving temperature: 16 to 18°C

Tasting notes: This Premier Cru is an exceptional wine, elegant and distinguished, well structured, with a beautiful aromatic bouquet of small fruits. But also with silky, balanced and velvety tannins. A wine of character, with a good structure that will require a few years to fully express itself. Good ageing potential.

The palate is explosive, rich and crisp, with a strong fruit presence. The woody notes are melted. The wine has silky tannins on the attack, which assert themselves a little more on the finish.

This is a tremendous Auxey-Duresses, and I cannot remember tasting a finer red wine from this village. While it is fruit-driven and floral with freshness, lift and silkiness, it is also underpinned with genuine Auxey minerality. While many wines from this appellation possess a slightly rustic or muscular air, this is as polished and suave as it gets, and I love it.
